Water underfloor heating aerothermal

Enjoy consistent comfort and lower running costs with hot water underfloor heating combined with an air source heat pump (ASHP). An underfloor heating system circulates low-temperature water through pipes located under the floor to heat rooms evenly, quietly and efficiently.

Warm water underfloor heating installation

As renewable energy engineers and aerothermal specialists, we design your hydronic underfloor heating system. We inspect your space, carry out heat loss and distribution studies, and specify the aerothermal heat pump + underfloor heating solution that best suits your home; we take care of everything.

From supply and installation to commissioning, balancing and configuring smart controls, we deliver a turnkey system so you can start enjoying your new underfloor heating right away. Suitable for houses or flats, primary or secondary residences, new builds or renovations, no problem.

How aerothermal hydronic underfloor heating works?

Air source heat pumps extract heat from the outside air and transfer it in the form of low-temperature water to a hydronic underfloor heating (UFH) circuit. Since the floor has a large surface area, it can operate at a temperature of 30-45 °C and still keep rooms at a comfortable temperature, which is precisely where heat pumps are most efficient.

Explanation of the thermal cycle (single loop)

  1. The air source heat pump (ASHP) extracts heat from the outside air and raises it using a refrigerant cycle.
  2. The heat pump’s hydraulic module then sends hot water to a manifold.
  3. The manifold then distributes the water through PEX/MLCP pipe loops under each zone (rooms).
  4. This slightly warms the floor (usually between 24 and 29 °C on the surface), radiating gentle heat into the space.
  5. To complete the loop, the cooler return water goes back to the heat pump to be reheated, and the cycle repeats.

Benefits of pairing underfloor heating with a heat pump

  • Reduce your bills with underfloor heating powered by an air source heat pump, reducing electricity consumption compared to high-temperature radiators.
  • Silent system as it operates without noise and provides uniform temperatures in all rooms.
  • Greater design freedom as there is no need to install radiators on the walls.
  • Healthier indoor environment with reduced air movement, which helps to limit dust circulation.
  • Sustainable heating system thanks to the use of aerothermal energy.
  • Zone control, heat only the rooms you need with smart thermostats and programming.
  • Works beautifully with low flow temperatures (30-45 °C), ideal for heat pumps.

Frequently asked questions about warm water underfloor heating

Modern aerothermal units are quiet outdoors (typically 50–60 dB at 1 m) and near-silent indoors; the water underfloor heating circuit has no fans, so rooms feel warm without noise or drafts. Proper siting, anti-vibration mounts and nighttime quiet modes keep operation discreet.

Yes. Quality air source heat pumps maintain output well below 0 °C thanks to inverter compressors and automatic defrost cycles. Because radiant floors run at low flow temperatures, the system remains efficient; correct sizing and weather compensation ensure comfort even during cold snaps.

Absolutely. Most aerothermal systems include a hot-water cylinder. Controls prioritise DHW production when needed, then switch back to underfloor heating. Cylinder sizing and coil area are matched to the heat pump to keep COP high and reheat times short.

Paired with UFH, an aerothermal heat pump operates at lower flow temps (≈30–45 °C), boosting efficiency versus high-temperature radiators. In well-insulated homes, this typically yields lower kWh use than direct electric and competitive costs vs gas—especially if combined with solar PV and smart tariffs.

Your underfloor heating circuit is closed-loop and requires very little maintenance, but it is still advisable to have it serviced annually. With our maintenance plan, we check the water quality (pH/inhibitor/glycol), clean the filters, check the pressures and safety valves, exercise the actuators, rebalance the flows and update/optimise the heat pump controls.

With proper treatment and commissioning, the pipes will last for decades, while the manifolds, pumps and controls will typically operate for 10 to 20 years, with occasional part replacements.
