The 500-meter limit for energy self-consumption is eliminated in Valencia

Eliminacion del limite 500 metros para autoconsumo en Valencia

Energy savings and the promotion of clean energy use have been reflected in the recent government regulation. The reason? The elimination of the 500m limit for collective self-consumption. This is undoubtedly good news for those who have solar panels on their homes, businesses, or in their neighborhood communities.

Now, what does this measure consist of, and how can it benefit you and others?

Photovoltaics and the elimination of the 500 m limit

Until recently, there was a 500-meter limit for collective self-consumption through the grid of energy generated by low-voltage photovoltaic plants. Thanks to this measure, other people will be able to enjoy the energy generated by this means at a distance greater than 500 meters. For some, this measure comes as no surprise, as there have been demands for this limit to be extended for some time.

This is because half a kilometer was not enough, compared to the 2 km limit in other neighboring countries (Portugal, France). Thanks to pressure from Catalonia and the Valencian Community, through proposals on the energy contingency plan, this limit has been extended. Although there had been requests to extend it from the original 500 m and 100 kW to 5 km and 5 MW of power, the new limit was finally set at 1 km.

What is the new limit for energy self-consumption in Valencia?

After petitions and reviews, which proved unfounded for limiting shared self-consumption to just 500 m, the Council of Ministers has finally approved its extension. The Council of Ministers decided to set the maximum distance for access to shared self-consumption at 1 kilometer (1 km). This will benefit many people, particularly those living in remote rural areas. This will make this type of self-consumption more competitive.

It will also promote the development of local energy communities, thereby increasing access to this type of clean energy. This will bring us closer to other EU countries that have been working in this vital sector for a long time. Before December 1st, both local governments and autonomous communities must outline their energy-saving, self-consumption, and other plans. The option of interest-free loans that fully cover the cost of renovations is even mentioned.

MASRED: photovoltaic installations for self-consumption

Although more needs to be done to reach the level of countries like Germany (1,750 installations) or the Netherlands (500 installations), this measure sets a good precedent. This means that many more consumers will benefit from the energy generated by photovoltaic installations within a radius of up to one kilometer, twice as far as conventional installations. This will significantly increase the options for shared solar self-consumption, thereby increasing access to this type of clean energy for more people.

This isn’t just good news; it’s also the time to start installing solar panels and enjoy the benefits of photovoltaic energy. At MASRED, we specialize in the development and installation of solar panels for residential and commercial applications.
