Optimizers: How to get the most out of your solar panel installation

Have you ever considered what happens when a shadow falls completely or partially on a solar panel? Does this affect the total production of the installation or only that of the panel itself? Can these losses be avoided?

At MASRED Engineering, we strive to offer you the best, which is why we’d like to inform you about devices such as optimizers, which help you maximize the benefits of your solar panel installation.

How do optimizers work?

For photovoltaic modules to be as efficient as possible when serving consumers, a series of variables must be met that are not always possible to achieve (or avoid).

It’s essential to note that, for instance, partial or complete shading significantly reduces this efficiency, thereby increasing energy losses substantially. In fact, the shading of a single panel is detrimental to the other panels connected to it.

These losses can be reduced by installing the panels so they are not too close to other objects. However, this isn’t always possible, which ultimately leads to the installation of optimizers.

These devices isolate malfunctions in a series of panels, preventing them from affecting the others, while constantly seeking the maximum power point. Here’s an example:

Without optimizers:

With optimizers:

Comparison:

Ptotal(ideal) = 282*10= 2820 Wp

Pwith shadow (WITHOUT optimizers) = 271*9 + 125= 2564 Wp

Pwith shade (WITH optimizers) = 282*9 + 153= 2691Wp

Power is higher when optimized, allowing more energy to be extracted from photovoltaic generation and, in turn, increasing the economic savings that this energy represents.
